Responsibilities: Carla joined CHPIR in January of 2014. Carla’s work has been focused on the creative engagement of young Latino/Hispanic & African American/Black men who have sex with men (MSM) around HIV prevention & care, mental health, stigma, risk reduction and substance use through mobile health and social networking.

 Current Work:

As a bilingual project coordinator, Carla leverages partnerships with organizations who care for and interface with key populations. These partnerships bridge traditional gaps and encourage dissemination of expertise across agencies to create, implement, and evaluate unique programs.

Carla has implemented classes for participants, conducts follow-up interviews, coordinates resource banking for providers and clients, and builds relationships with community partners for rapid HIV/HepC training and testing. Carla is also responsible for recruiting, consenting, and conducting interviews with hepatitis C positive individuals in the Duke and Durham VA liver clinics for the CADRE and Hep ART II research teams.

About Carla: Carla Mena is originally from Lima, Peru and currently lives in Raleigh, NC. She received her B.S. in Biology from Meredith College. A strong advocate for social justice and equality, she has volunteered in many community outreach programs and has worked with El Pueblo Inc., March of Dimes, Adolescent Pregnancy Prevention Campaign of North Carolina and other entities that conduct focus groups and conferences about Sexual and Reproductive Health for both youth and adults groups. She was recently honored with Univision’s “Orgullo de Nuestra Comunidad” Award (Pride of Our Community) for her contributions in leadership and service to the welfare of our community.
